Drawing Concentration
Traces
I am compelled by the diverse ways we understand traveling through space and how to graphically represent navigation, memory, (dis)orientation, and the passage of time. The relationship between a map and the territory it represents fascinates me; for my exhibition, Traces, I focused on the path I walk daily, from my home to my studio, and used drawing methods to translate my route into different types of mapping systems. One image is reduced to a solitary, quavering line. Another panoramic drawing represents the terrain so specifically, that every blade of grass and stone is represented, life-sized. Drawing is the perfect visual language for me because of its primacy and immediacy; it has allowed me to conceptually situate myself and explore the basic physical realities of taking a walk.
